Meticulous research and attention to detail were key to reconstructing a piece of African American history.

The log cabin reconstruction is intended to capture as closely as possible the residence of the first African American man of science. In collaboration with MHT, details were explored from muntin profiles down to the shape of each type of nail.
Little evidence of the original structure remained on site, but archeologists were able to determine the size of the cabin through the remains of the stone foundation and hearth, and the nail scatter pattern suggested door and window locations.
Construction was completed using connections and details accurate to the 18th century, with only a handful of modern concessions to extend the life of the building.
